TOPIC OVERVIEW .
This lesson serves to give students the ranks within the NPF and the responsibilities for each rank.
OBJECTIVES .
The objective is to provide students with clear understanding how the NPF ranks are structured in order forth to gain a greater understanding of seniority within the PF.
REQUIRED MATERIALS .
Students require a file and/or folder, pen and paper and this will form the basis of the student's "Best Book".
CONTENT (LESSON BODY) .
INTRODUCTION.
The NPF is like any other organisation - government or private with a defined rank structure ranging from Constable to Inspector General Of Police. With the rank structure, the staff of this police force is about 3, 71,800 currently and it functions are divided across 3 major structures: Administrative, Authority and organizational.
COMMAND STRUCTURE.
The hierarchal system helps to function smoothly and maintain a pyramid structure for management of police department and military.
The hierarchy of the Nigeria Police starts from the Inspector General police and goes down to the constable. Below given is the Nigeria Police Hierarchy in descending order:

The hierarchy of the Nigeria Police starts from the Inspector General police and goes down to the constable. Below given is the Nigeria Police Hierarchy in descending order:
- Inspector General of Police. The IGP is the head of the Nigerian Police force. He is the major decision maker for the entire force.
- Deputy General. Every rank below the Deputy General of Police takes commands from him with respect to their daily duties as well as duties during emergencies. The DG acts for the Inspector General of police in his absence.
- Asst. Inspector General. The Asst. Inspector General (AIG) acts for the Inspector General of Police in his absence. He is responsible to look after the execution of commands given by his seniors and take reports about it from the juniors.
- Commissioner. The Commissioner is in control of the Contingents of the NPF which is stationed all over the states. He is subject to the command of the Inspector General in his absence on duty.
- Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner is responsible to take care of the execution of the work plans decided by the Commissioner of Police.
- Asst. Commissioner. The Asst. Commissioner assists the Deputy Commissioner in his duties and acts as a direct junior. The Asst. Comm. takes care of assigning the tasks to various departments.
- Chief Superintendent. The Chief Superintendent looks after the activities of the Inspector of the Police and gives information to the IGP as well as his other junior rankers. The Chief Superintendent is responsible for looking after the Inspectors of all the areas.
- Superintendent. The work of the Chief Superintendent is further divided among Superintendents of Police and the reports are submitted to the Chief Superintendent.
- Deputy Superintendent. This rank is the main channel between the seniors and the juniors. The Deputy Superintendent distributes tasks and looks after the developments and can give commands in absence of the Superintendent. The Deputy Superintendent's work is to assist all of the three major seniors of the sub-hierarchy.
- The Inspector. The Inspector is responsible for looking after crime cases individually and heading first level and initial investigations carried out after a crime takes place.
- Sergeant Major. The Sergeant Major, also known as the Senior Sergeant is responsible for assigning controlling tasks to the Sergeants in order to look after the junior police forces at different police stations of a particular area.
- Sergeant. The Sergeant looks after Corporals and Constables of multiple police stations of large areas and assigns responsibilities of patrolling or other duties to them.
- Corporal. The corporal takes care of working on orders given by the sergeant and makes sure that the Constables work according to their orders.
- Constable. The Constable is the lowest rank in the NPF. They are the first ones to take action in any situation depending upon the commands of the Corporal.
